Week 3 Reflection
Coming out of the 2nd meeting of the coalition, I see great potential in how our class can work together throughout the semester. It would not be fair to say there were not a few speed bumps throughout the meeting, however, with how communication will be handled. There were times when multiple people at once were trying to get their ideas across, which got us all nowhere. There was even a moment when I thought a full on confrontation would occur between the moderator of the day and one of the other students based on how the moderator was handling the coalition. Thankfully, I was proven wrong and both parties settled the situation in a mature and civilized manner.
Only three weeks into the semester, and I truly believe that we have a great group of individuals in this class. Patience and communication are skills that take a little while to master. So although there were some moments that lacked these skills this week, I am confident that we as a team can work out our differences and accomplish the things that actually matter.
I am glad that we were able to create a mission statement. Not much can be accomplished if we as a unit do not know what we're working towards. For thirteen individuals to agree on one sole definition of what Rape Culture is and what its underlying roots are is nothing short of difficult. Thankfully, we were all able to agree on how it should be seen and handled in the classroom.
I am excited for future coalition meetings where all of us will be able to tell our stories on how this topic has affected our lives in one way or another. I believe these stories will educate the rest of us and help us become more united as the weeks progress.
